About The Family Caregiver

An easy-to-navigate survival guide laced with the author’s moving personal anecdotes, The Family Caregiver is a must-have companion on the journey of caring for aging parents and loved ones.

Stephanie A. Kennan knows eldercare and healthcare inside and out—she has worked in the health policy arena for over three decades in Washington, DC. However, she still felt unprepared when her mother’s health problems began. Like so many others who find themselves in the role of caregiving for loved ones, she found she had to learn how to manage her mother’s finances, make difficult health decisions, and select short-term and long-term care options.

This guidebook is ideal for people at any point of their experience as a family caregiver, from people who want to prepare for their eventual role as a caregiver to those first-time caregivers who find themselves facing a moment of crisis, and the “sandwich generation,” who care for both children and aging parents at the same time.

Along with details about how to handle your aging parents’ financial planning, how to know the differences between long-term care options including home health and facilities, and from Medicare and Medicaid to long-term care and Medigap coverage, readers will find practical checklists to help them organize the legal documents, medication lists, medical records, and other necessary information that they’ll need to support their loved one.

While the logistical aspects of being a family caregiver are certainly challenging, sometimes the emotional toll can be even harder. Setting boundaries with parents and deciding how much caregiving you can take on are vital decisions, and this book provides insight and support, as well as tips and suggestions for managing the stress of caregiving.
